Inclement Weather Procedures
Procedure for School Closure Due to Bad Weather
As we move into the time of year where weather can change in just a few hours, we want to revisit the process on how Franklin ISD determines whether or not to delay the start of school or cancel school due to weather or road conditions.
When there is a chance for the weather to change that will potentially cause poor road conditions, FISD has a team of people that work together to collect as much information about travel conditions as possible before making the decision to delay or cancel school the next day.
Here is our process:
If road conditions are not hazardous before nightfall but conditions are expected to get worse overnight, FISD will check with TXDot and drive major highways and FM roads beginning at 4 a.m. the morning of a possible safety concern to determine if school will be delayed or canceled for that day. Most of the time, school delay or closure will be determined in the morning by 5 a.m. prior to bus routes beginning.
If road conditions are hazardous before nightfall and conditions are expected to get worse overnight, FISD may go ahead and make the decision that evening to delay or cancel school for the next day.
School delays or closures will be communicated to parents through KBTX, social media sites, and Parent Square if there are any changes in the regular scheduled school day. Please make sure all contact information is correct in your child’s parent portal.
It is impossible for FISD to check all road conditions in the district for hazards. FISD supports your right as a parent to keep your child home if you feel the road conditions to school are unsafe at any time.
